From what I've heard about the comp, many countries have teams where teammates are rewarded more for participation than winning so it's not that big of an issue (although there are teams that are more competitive from the soccer-fanatical countries)

Hi Keren,

Kol Hakavod for volunteering at this event. I remember going along to watch a bit of it last year when they held it in Melbourne at Federation Square.

Stupid question time:

Does having a larger homeless population (bad) mean that you have a larger base to pick your team from, and then have a better chance of having a winning team? (I can hear you say: "Now that REALLY is a stupid question!").

Great story Keren!

For me as a football nut this is terrific.

It's great that these people find meaning in their lives after the tournament. I like the story about the Nigerian fellow who is now a coach. Perhaps it would be a good idea to grant the finalists similar training or access to short courses in other skills as prizes to further boos their esteem and feeling of purpose.

To be fair, the pride of home ownership could be just as much of a creative fix as the pride of participating in a world cup. But yes, these projects cost so much less than run-of-mill welfare that they're probably much more efficient at getting economic, psychological and community results.
