AJN owner acquires Galus Australis

In what is believed to be the biggest deal of its kind in the Australian Jewish online media sector, Robert Magid, owner of the Australian Jewish News (AJN), has purchased Galus Australis from co-owners Rachel Sacks-Davis and Anthony Frosh. Galus Australis is the most widely read online Jewish publication in Australia.

While the purchase price has not been publicly disclosed, the figure is apparently substantial enough that it has significantly surprised sector analysts, given that Galus Australis currently makes almost no revenue.

A spokesperson for Mr Magid told the AJN that “Galus Australis is a very respected brand, and has a broad and highly engaged audience. We believe we’ll bring the necessary synergies and experience to successfully monetise this acquisition. There is tremendous untapped value”

It is believed that in the short term, Magid plans to introduce more foreign syndicated content to the Galus website, as well establishing a weekly column on the website for AIJAC.

In a joint statement, Ms Sacks-Davis and Mr Frosh commented “We have thoroughly enjoyed developing this pluralistic publication, but it’s also been a tremendous drain on our time. We’re looking forward to getting our lives back, and having the opportunity to pursue other endeavours. We’d like to thank all our readers, and wish them a purim sameach.”

  • Dennis the sensible one says:

Ruth Magid used to complain that there were too many ads in the paper. So don’t go selling any banner ads.

  • jan says:

We are here because it is NOT the jewish news…

please respectfully keep that in mind Mr Magid

    cheers

  • does anyone realize it’s Purim on Sunday??

  • Michael Brull says:

Jn what is believed to be the biggest deal of its kind in the Australian Jewish online media sector, the Australian Jewish News (AJN), has been purchased by Galus Australis. While the purchase price has not been publicly disclosed, the figure is apparently substantial enough that it has significantly surprised sector analysts, given that AJN makes almost no revenue.

It is believed that in the short term, the Galus team plans to introduce more foreign syndicated content to the AJN , as well establishing a weekly column on the website for the Australian Jewish Democratic Society, alternating with the Monash Centre for Jewish Civilization Director’s Mark Baker.

In a statement, Robert Magid, the former owner of the AJN said “I have thoroughly enjoyed developing this publication, but it’s also been a tremendous drain on my time, and I realise that it needs a new perspective–no one read it any more, not even Michael Danby, though he paid for his supplements. I’m looking forward to getting my live back, and having the opportunity to pursue other endeavours. I’d like to thank all our readers, and wish them a purim sameach.”

    News just to hand:

AJN Watch has offered Maggid a counter not to purchase G.A

A spokesperson for the site said that they don’t have the resources to create a GA Watch at this time. Having another on line publication linked to the AJN would ensure further mediocrity and compete with the space that AJN already occupies.

The spokesperson insisted on remaining anon but did offer half a dozen ISP addresses belonging to various Jewish community leaders in order to remain authentic

The report is yet to be confirmed by anyone at AJN watch

  • larry stillman says:

Lion FM has made a counter offer– it will take over, bugger the loss, sue everyone, and fill pages and pages with ‘interesting commentary’ on their enemies.

  • larry stillman says:

I just got a phone call: Rupert Murdoch has offered to take over Galus, as long as Ashley Browne can be editor and take all those lovely phone calls from community ‘personalities’, including several of his relatives. I know he would love it

  • Mandi Katz says:

Larry and Eli – brilliant! (dont often get to say that in one sentence!) – the Danby line is top shelf.

  • larry stillman says:

spelling errors and all…I kinda thought so too. Why doesn’t he just take it over in fact?

  • Malki Rose says:

    Larry,
    that is absolute gold…
I thought Frosh’s version took the cake (or hamentashen) but yours eats it!!!!
Between Danby and Lion, we are in stitches!!!!

  • And so the monopoly on the Jewish media just got a little big bigger.

Magid’s strategy is clearly to silence any potentially differing viewpoints to that of their Australian Zionist Weekly.

I wonder if they’ll be bothered going after Henry Benjamin’s J-Wire.

    Michael.

  • Akiva says:

    Mikey. It’s PURIM. :)

  • Eh? Is this some sort of Jewish ‘April Fools Day’? What next? Green hamentaschen? :P

  • Liam says:

Very clever, and liking Larry’s comments, too.

  • Kovi Rose says:

    oh Larrry!
    pure comic genius.

(jan i do see where you are coming from)

  • Mandi Katz says:

@ Larry – something interesting about Browne (to his wife at least) is that for a Tory, he has a lot of Trots in his family .

  • Marky says:

I searched for definition of the word “trots”. Came up with the following:

Left leaning jumpshorse suffering from diarreah.

  • Reality Check says:

It should have gone to auction.

  • food for thought says:

michael do you have a sense of humour??? goodness gracious people.

    hilarious laugh out loud moment!!!!!

    very funny stuff this one.

  • F4T, indeed I do have a sense if humour, and in retrospect I feel stupid for not realising this as a piece of quality satire. I have no experience of practical jokes at Purim, so was not expecting this and did not understand the clue/s.

    Michael.

    take it easy

  • Shira Wenig says:

very cute. and a nice way to unite the galus readership – love Larry’s comments!

  • Shaun says:

Brilliant. Great Purim stunt. Nearly fell for it but that line about aijac gave it away

  • Sol Salbe says:

Larry Stillman should quit dabbling in politics and go into comedy writing. It was brilliant and funny. Galus needs A “like” button.

  • Nomi says:

    Absolutely brilliant.
I’m glad we can agree on something

  • KarovLeEmet says:

Hmmm. If I start my own blog that becomes a popular mouthpiece, maybe also Bobby will want to buy it. I’ll have to give this some serious consideration in time for next Purim.

A freilichen Purim from an Aussie in exile in Israel (Galus Australis lehefech!)

    Who also get’s that joke?

    Good one Larry!!

  • AusIsr says:

heeb – no, it was St Paddy’s Day on Taanit Esther, not Purim! All the more reason to fast!

The editors are aware (and have been for a long time) of the identity of this person who has a habit of leaving stupid nonsensical comments on this website, as well as other Jewish websites. We have not exposed this person’s identity up until now, but if the incidence of these comments continues to escalate, we may have to do so.
