Australian Ambassador, Tim Fischer, Lashes out at the “Jewish Lobby:” Discuss….

From the editor:

tim fischer2Barney Zwartz of The Sydney Morning Herald reports:

“The New York Jewish lobby has unfairly blackened the name of World War II pope Pius XII in the interests of a modern political agenda and needs to be challenged, former Australian deputy Prime Minister Tim Fischer has charged.”

Is it a worry that an Australian ambassador takes such a dim view of Jewish organisations and their links to Israel?

Is it problematic that he is clearly partisan on the Israel/Palestine issue?

For those au fait with the role of the war time Pope, do you agree that he has been unfairly maligned?

Now wasn’t Fischer John Howard’s deputy Prime Minister, even when he sided with the Palestinian leadership every time.

That comment makes it seem like you are an ALP hack.

After all, Tim Fischer was nominated by Kevin Rudd as the first resident Australian Ambassador to the Holy See.
So this is not a partisan issue.

With regard to Pius XII, I’m no expert, but readers can see this article and the counter-arguments in the lengthy comment thread that follows.

Fischer was always hostile to the State of Israel, and this may have been because he was looking to maximise trade with the Arab countries.

However, this latest comment about the “Jewish Lobby” adds weight to the fact that there’s more to his hostility than simply political expediency.

There are unfortunately Australians on both sides of the political spectrum whose understanding of history, any history let alone 20th century history, is remarkably shallow. Possibly because they have been taught from a narrow perspective of sources that are aligned to a particular historical overview and a biased one. It takes a real teacher to present, interpret and debate material from a wide range of sources.

Not at all frosh, and I am no fan of Kevin Rudd either. And there is a difference between being deputy PM and ambassador to the Vetican. I am saying that so many of the contributors to this site reckon Howard was Israel’s best friend etc. but his deputy was no friend of Israel, and his latest rants about the powerful Jewish lobby, an effective anti-Semitic conspiracy from the right.
